3 Must-Have Lead Screw Guarding Products

No matter how reliable the machine, malfunctions and accidents are constant threats—whether we anticipate them or not. It’s important to implement thorough machine guarding safety plans and procedures into your day-to-day activities, but it’s also a good idea to invest in products that will help take those safety measures to the next level. Lead screw safety guards are just one of the key safety products you should be using across your facilities. The lead screw on a lathe is very powerful, and as the operator stands directly in front of it, clothes, hair, or jewelry could get caught—causing injury. That’s why lead screw guarding products are so essential; they can help your team avoid entanglement hazards that are associated with rotating parts of a machine.

Lead Screw Guards from Stronghold Safety

At Stronghold Safety Engineering, we offer three different types of lead screw guards. We want to make sure that your employees and machines stay in peak condition at all times, so we’ve broken down each product with a detailed description to give you a better understanding of how they work—and why you need them.

1. Centryco Lead Screw Cover

Centryco Lead Screw Covers are industrial-duty lead and feed screw covers for lathes. At Stronghold, they are custom quoted and made to fit specific machine measurements. Installing on both sides of the carriage, this safety guard covers the lead and feed screw completely. The rotating lead screw of metal lathes can be extremely dangerous, causing accidental contact or entanglement of the operator if not protected properly. This guard, made of 1095 blue carbon steel, works to protect the operator, as well as the lead screw itself.

Surrounding the screw with overlapping coils and spring action, these spiral metal covers are held in place by simple flanges—while the cover compresses and expands as the lathe saddle moves. For installation, your options are either open-wound and over-end models. If you’re ready to learn more about these essential machine safety guards, contact Stronghold Safety today.

2. Repar2 Lead Screw Cover

The Repar2 Lead Screw Cover is another great option as a screw cover for metal lathes, preventing accidental entanglement hazards. This guard installs on both the left and right side of the carriage, as well as on each end of the bed in order to cover lead and feed screws on the machine. The blind cover retracts into the roller mechanism inside the steel box as the carriage moves.

Made from high-strength, heat-resistant Aramid fibers, this guard extends the life of the machine by protecting screws against chip deposits. The roll and spring mechanisms are enclosed in a welded steel box—and with a high-strength spring retraction mechanism, you are ensured a sag-free operation.

3. Silvaflame Lathe Lead Screw Cover

The Silvaflame Lathe Lead Screw Cover is an industrial-duty lead and feed screw cover for lathes. This safety guard works to prevent entanglements by installing on both sides of the carriage and covering the lead and feed screw completely. It’s also manufactured with a steel casing.

The Silvaflame Lathe Lead Screw Cover works to ensure protection for the operator by using a heavyweight neoprene nylon as its sheet medium, sprung to give a full closure against the leadscrew. As the lathe saddle moves, the swarf- and emulsion-resistant nylon material pulls out of its spring-loaded roller box. The material recoils as the saddle returns, working just like a window blind.
